When is the right time to have sex?

The window when women can conceive is quite small. That’s why it’s important to have sex in the lead-up to and during ovulation.

Every woman’s cycle is different, but by understanding when your partner is most fertile, you can both make the most of the opportunity to conceive. Our ovulation calendar is a useful tool and your partner can also use ovulation test kits (available at pharmacies) to pinpoint the exact days leading up to ovulation.

Planning when you and your partner have sex might remove some of the spontaneity, but it will make it easier to avoid scheduling work trips or late nights in the lead-up to and during ovulation.

Life can be busy and to help you both keep track, you might find it useful to mark the days your partner is likely to be ovulating in your calendars.

Making sure you both feel comfortable

Trying to conceive might make you feel a range of emotions, but try not to put pressure on yourselves and enjoy being intimate with one another.

The window to conceive might be small, but setting the right mood is still important. Find a time when you can relax and don’t have to rush. Plan a romantic gesture – like breakfast in bed or a candlelit dinner – or simply find a moment to enjoy each others’ company. It can be easy to only focus on getting pregnant, but if one of you feels unwell or has had a bad day, it’s best not to dwell on the missed opportunity and try again tomorrow.

How often should we have sex to get pregnant?

Sperm can survive for up to seven days inside a woman’s body, so your partner can get pregnant if you’ve had sex in the days leading up to ovulation. However, the chance of conceiving is highest when you have sex within a day or two of ovulation.
